About C12L steel

C12L is 12L14, the leaded free-machining steel: about as easy to cut as steel gets. The lead breaks the chip and lets the tool fly, so it turns, drills, and threads fast with a clean finish. Reach for it on high-volume machined parts, fittings, and fasteners where machinability is the whole game. It's low strength and not for welding, so keep it off load-bearing and welded work.

What is 12L14 steel good for?
Fast, high-volume machining: fittings, fasteners, pins, and screw-machine parts. The lead makes it one of the most machinable steels there is. The trade is low strength and poor weldability, so it's a machining steel, not a structural one.
