About 44W steel

44W is the CSA structural grade and the deepest pile on our carbon rack. It's the weldable, forgiving mild steel for frames, gates, trailers, and weld-on brackets, the everyday fab steel. If your plans, your how-to, or your engineer call for A36, 44W is the bar that does that job in Canada: a near-equivalent specced a touch stronger at about 44 ksi yield, and it substitutes honestly anywhere A36 is called out.

Is 44W the same as A36?
Close enough to buy, not identical on paper. 44W is the Canadian structural grade and meets or beats A36 on strength (44 ksi vs 36 ksi yield), so a 44W bar covers an A36 callout for general fab. On stamped, engineered work the substitution is your engineer's call in writing.
What is 44W steel good for?
Frames, gates, trailers, brackets, and general fabrication. The W means weldable, so it takes a weld without ceremony and no preheat. It's the workhorse of the carbon rack.
