About A53 steel

A53 is standard steel pipe, the everyday grade for structural and general pipe work: railings, posts, frames, sleeves, and low-pressure fluid lines. It comes in the NPS sizing system, where the name isn't the measurement, and we stock it in schedule 40 and schedule 80 walls. It welds and threads cleanly.

What's the difference between A53 and A106 pipe?
A53 is the general-purpose structural and low-pressure grade. A106 is the high-temperature grade, drawn with no weld seam, for steam and boiler lines. For railings, posts, and general fab, A53 is the usual buy.
Why isn't 1/2 inch pipe half an inch?
Pipe sizes are names, not measurements. A 1/2 pipe is 0.840 inch across the outside; the schedule sets the wall and what's left is the bore. The outside diameter stays fixed so fittings and threads match.
