About 4140 steel

4140 is chromoly, a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel that heat treats to high strength and toughness. It's the grade for parts that take serious load or shock: shafts, axles, gears, couplings, and tooling. You machine it in the annealed state, then harden and temper for the strength the part needs.

What is 4140 used for?
High-stress parts: shafts, axles, gears, and tooling that need strength and toughness beyond plain carbon steel. It's heat-treatable, so you machine it soft and harden it after.
Can you weld 4140?
It welds, but it's an alloy steel with real carbon, so preheat and post-weld heat treatment matter or the weld zone cracks. For loaded parts, plan the heat treatment around the joint or design it bolted.
