About 6061 aluminum

6061-T6 is the workhorse aluminum, and it's what most of our rack is. It machines cleanly, welds with standard filler, and lives outside without paint, so it covers nearly every bracket, frame, and machined part a shop throws at it. In the tempers we stock, it carries roughly double the yield of 6063, which is why it's the default unless your project hands you a reason to switch.

Is 6061 strong enough for structural parts?
For most shop and hobby structure, yes. 6061-T6 holds real load at about a third the weight of steel, which is why trailer brackets, machine bases, and weld-on frames get built from it. Heat near a weld drops the temper, so design the joint where the weld isn't carrying the worst of the load.
Should I buy 6061 or 6063?
Buy 6061 when the part carries load or meets a cutting tool. Buy 6063 when the metal is the finished surface people see, like railing or trim, because it extrudes smoother and anodizes more evenly. When in doubt, 6061: overbuilding trim costs a little, underbuilding a bracket costs the bracket.
