About 1144 steel

1144 is a free-machining medium-carbon steel, often sold as a stress-relieved 'stressproof' bar. It gives you high strength and good machinability without heat treatment, and it stays straight when you machine it because the internal stress is already relieved. Good for shafts, studs, and machined parts that need strength straight off the saw.
