Where can you buy metal online in Canada? (2026 guide)
You've got five real options: cut-to-length shops like ours, walk-in chains like Metal Supermarkets, regional online suppliers, US sites that ship north, and your local steel yard. The right one depends on the lengths you need, the alloy, and how fast you need it. Here's the honest comparison.
What are your real options in 2026?
Five, roughly. An online cut-to-length shop like ours, a walk-in chain like Metal Supermarkets, a handful of regional Canadian suppliers with online stores, the big US sites that ship north, and your local steel yard. Each one wins in a different situation, so here's the honest map.
| Option | How it works | Strongest when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metals 'R' Us (us) | Pick an alloy, type your length in inches, price shows right away. Cut to ±1/8″ and shipped from Dartmouth, NS | Exact lengths with no waste, shipped anywhere in Canada | $40 order minimum, 96″ max per piece online |
| Metal Supermarkets | Walk-in branches in many Canadian cities, they cut while you wait. Online ordering varies by branch | You're near a branch and need it today | Pricing and stock differ branch to branch |
| Regional online suppliers | Metal Pros, Millennium Metals, Mr. Metal, McKinnon Metals, and others, each with their own catalogue and shipping zones | One of them is close to you | Coverage and cut options vary, check before you build a cart |
| US sites (OnlineMetals and friends) | Huge catalogues shipped cross-border | An alloy or temper nobody stocks in Canada | USD pricing, duties and brokerage at the door, longer waits |
| Local steel yard | Full sticks and structural sizes, often will sell drops | 20 ft sticks, big structural jobs, local delivery | Many won't do small cuts, minimums vary |
When is an online cut-to-length shop the right call?
When you know the lengths your project needs and you don't want to pay for the rest of the stick. You order a 37″ piece, you get a 37″ piece, cut to ±1/8″ with no cutting fee. We ship pieces up to 96″ anywhere in Canada, and anything under 48″ travels at the best parcel rates, so a railing kit or a stack of bracket blanks ships for less than you'd guess. Need 21 ft sticks? That's a quick quote request instead.
It's also the only option where the full price is on the screen before you commit. Our prices are in CAD and update daily, so what you see at checkout is what the metal costs that day. If you've never ordered metal by the inch before, here's exactly how it works.
When should you walk into a store instead?
When today beats tomorrow. If you're in a city with a Metal Supermarkets branch and the job is stalled until you have the piece, walk in, have them cut it, drive home. No parcel beats a car trunk on speed. The trade-off is you take the price and stock on the rack that day, and in smaller cities there's often no branch at all.
If you're in the Halifax area, that walk-in option is us: the shop at 85 Gloria McCluskey Ave in Burnside cuts while you wait, and online orders are free to pick up.
Should you ever order from a US site?
Sometimes, yes. The US catalogues run deeper on aerospace alloys and unusual tempers than anything in Canada, ours included. If a drawing calls for a grade no Canadian supplier stocks, that's when a US order makes sense. Go in with your eyes open: you'll pay in USD, the courier will collect duties and brokerage at the door, and the wait is longer. For common grades like 6061, 304, or 1018, you'll usually land cheaper staying in Canada. Before you import something unusual, ask us to source it: special requests take 2-21 days but skip the border headache entirely.
What about your local steel yard?
Still the right answer for some jobs. If you're framing a building, buying I-beam by the tonne, or you want 20 ft sticks delivered by boom truck, a structural yard is built for exactly that. Many will also sell you drops from the cut floor if you ask nicely. Where they struggle is the small stuff: a single 30″ piece of stainless flat bar is a nuisance order at a yard, and plenty of them have account minimums that make hobby work impractical.
How do you compare prices fairly?
One number matters: the landed cost of your exact cut list at your door. A bar that looks cheap per foot stops being cheap if you have to buy 20 ft of it, pay a cutting fee, or drive an hour each way. So price the whole job: the pieces you actually need, cut, shipped or picked up. That's the comparison where buying small quantities online usually surprises people.
