About 316 stainless steel
316 is 304 with 2-3% molybdenum added, and that one ingredient is what defends the surface against chlorides, the salt-family chemistry that pits stainless. It's the grade for anything within reach of salt: wharf and boat hardware, pool and hot tub fittings, fish-plant equipment, parts washed with de-icing salt all winter.
