How does judging work?
Our team scores every approved build on the four criteria, 100 points total, at the end of each month. Top 3 win. Skill decides it, not chance. Four criteria, 25 points each: craftsmanship, ingenuity, use of the metal, story and photos.
Who can enter?
Anyone with a metalsrus.ca order from the last 12 months. One order can back up to 3 different builds.
Does the order have to be from the website?
Yes. Your order number and email are how we verify the metal. Counter sales at the Dartmouth shop don't carry an order number we can check.
Why do I have to post it publicly first?
Builders showing their work in their own communities is the point. Post it where you already share projects, then bring us the link. Say it's a contest entry in the post.
What do winners get?
Store credit: $300 for first, $150 for second, $75 for third, every month. That's $525 in store credit going out monthly. Top 3 also spend the next month on our homepage, which sees 100,000+ visitors, with their name, city, and links.
What are my chances, honestly?
Better than most contests. We're a small shop and the entry count sits right on this page. Three builds win money every month; do the math.
What happens to my photos?
They stay yours. You give us permission to show them here, and in our emails and socials only if you ticked that box. Want them down? Email us and we remove the build, photos included.
When are winners announced?
The second Friday of each month, on this page and by email if you opted in. The first cycle covers July 2026 entries, announced Friday, August 14.
The official rules
As of July 2026. These rules live on the Built with MRU page. The short version is in the FAQ above them; if the two ever disagree, these rules win.
1. Who's running this
Metals 'R' Us, 85 Gloria McCluskey Ave, Burnside Industrial Park, Dartmouth, NS B3B 2Z3. Questions about the contest: sales@metalsrus.ca.
2. Who can enter
You can enter if you're a Canadian resident at the age of majority in your province or territory, and you built something from metal bought on metalsrus.ca in the last 12 months. MRU staff and their immediate families can't enter. There's no fee to enter.
3. How to enter
Post your build publicly first: your favourite subreddit, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, X, or a forum. Mention in the post that it's a Built with MRU contest entry. Then submit at metalsrus.ca/pages/built-with-mru with your order number, the email on that order, 1 to 5 photos, your build story, and the link to your public post. Up to 3 entries per order. We check the link during review.
4. The monthly cycle
Your entry counts in the calendar month we receive it, Atlantic time. Each month closes at 11:59 PM Atlantic on its last day. We review every entry within 48 hours of it arriving; only approved entries get judged.
5. How judging works
A panel of 3 MRU staff scores every approved entry on four criteria, 25 points each: craftsmanship, ingenuity, use of the metal, story and photos. Each judge scores on their own; the scores are added. Ties go to the higher craftsmanship total, then the higher use-of-the-metal total, then a panel revote between the tied entries only. Winning here is decided by skill, not chance. The panel's decisions are final.
6. Prizes
Three prizes every month: $300, $150, and $75 in metalsrus.ca store credit. Approximate total value: $525 CAD per month. Credit is issued as a gift card. It doesn't expire, it applies to product (shipping is billed as usual), and it has no cash value. We email winners at the order email on announcement day; you have 14 days to claim. Unclaimed prizes go to the next-highest score.
7. When winners are announced
The second Friday of the following month, on the Built with MRU page and our homepage.
8. What we do with your entry
Approved entries appear on metalsrus.ca with your photos and story. If you ticked the credit box, we also show your first name, last initial, city, and any links you added. If you ticked the reuse box, we may also feature your photos and story in MRU emails, social posts, and ads, credited the same way. Your photos and story stay yours; you give us a non-exclusive licence to show them as described here.
9. Take it down anytime
Email us and your build comes down, photos included. We acknowledge within 1 business day and it's off the site within 2 business days, usually the same day. Files are deleted from our systems within 30 days. If your build already won, the prize stays yours; the public listing still comes down. Our privacy policy covers how we handle your information, including under Quebec's Law 25.
10. Housekeeping
We can decline or remove entries that are unsafe, not metal, not your work, or spam. We may update these rules with notice on this page; changes don't apply to entries already submitted. Void where prohibited. This contest operates under Canadian law, including the Competition Act.
