About 4340 steel

4340 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, one step up from 4140 for deep-hardening, high-strength parts. It's the grade for heavily loaded shafts, gears, and aircraft-style components where strength and toughness both matter. Machine it annealed, then heat treat to spec.

Should I use 4140 or 4340?
Both are heat-treatable alloy steels. 4340 adds nickel for deeper hardening and higher strength in thick sections, so it's the choice for the most heavily loaded shafts and gears. 4140 covers most high-strength work for less.
