About 304 stainless steel

304 is the classic 18/8 stainless and the deepest part of our stainless rack. It's the stainless you want for anything that lives away from salt: indoor railings, kitchen and brewery fittings, brackets, food-contact surfaces, machine guards. If your project is indoors or inland, 304 covers it and you put the savings into the rest of the build.

Will 304 stainless rust?
It resists corrosion, it doesn't ignore it. Inland, 304 stays clean for decades with the odd wash. Near salt it can show brown tea-staining and then pitting, which is exactly where you'd step up to 316.
Should I buy 304 or 316?
One question: does the part ever meet salt water, road salt, or pool chemistry? No means 304. Yes means 316, which adds molybdenum for chloride resistance. Indoor and inland work is 304's whole job.
