Where to buy metal in Halifax and Dartmouth
Most metal in the Halifax area sells out of Burnside Industrial Park in Dartmouth, and the job decides the counter. We cut steel, stainless, and aluminum to length at 85 Gloria McCluskey Ave, free pickup or walk in. Metal Supermarkets suits rack browsing; recyclers win on scrap. Honest map inside.
Where do you actually buy metal in Halifax?
Mostly in Dartmouth. Most of the metal sold in the Halifax area moves through Burnside Industrial Park, on the Dartmouth side of the harbour. The right counter depends on the job: cut pieces for a project, full structural sticks, or scrap-grade offcuts by weight.
Here's the honest map, ours included. We sell cut-to-length pieces, so we're the stop when you know the lengths your project needs. Other counters in the park do other jobs well, and pretending otherwise wouldn't help you. What you're building decides where you should park.
What do you get at our counter?
Cut-to-length metal in the exact sizes your project needs: steel, stainless, aluminum, brass, copper, bronze, chrome, and tool steel, every piece cut free to ±1/8″. Order online and pick up free at 85 Gloria McCluskey Ave, or walk in Mon-Fri, 7:30am to 5pm Atlantic.
Online orders are usually ready the next business day, and walk-in cuts happen at the counter; in a hurry, call first and we'll tell you what the saw queue allows. Prices are in CAD on every product page: pick the alloy and shape, type your length in inches, and the number shows before anything hits the cart. The order minimum is $40, and you can mix metals to clear it. The shop's been selling metal since 1997, and the phone is 902-468-1112 if you'd rather talk a cut through first.
Who else sells metal in the Halifax area?
A few counters, each built for a different job, and it's worth knowing which is which. Metal Supermarkets runs a Dartmouth location, Harbour Metals handles the structural end, and the recyclers sell offcuts by weight. Stock and hours move, so call before you drive.
| Counter | Built for |
|---|---|
| Metals 'R' Us (us) | Exact lengths priced per inch, online or at the counter. Free cuts to ±1/8″, $40 order minimum |
| Metal Supermarkets (Dartmouth) | A walk-in, small-quantity chain. Good when you want to browse the racks in person |
| Harbour Metals | Structural steel and bigger fabrication work |
| Recyclers and scrap yards | Offcuts by weight when the grade doesn't matter. Cheapest metal in the city for practice welds and yard art |
None of that is a knock on anybody. A browsing rack, a structural yard, and a scrap bin all answer real questions; they're just different questions. If you're weighing local counters against ordering online at all, here's the Canada-wide comparison.
Should you pick up or have it shipped?
In the Halifax area with a vehicle, pickup usually wins: it's free, orders are typically ready the next business day, and you skip the courier entirely. Shipping earns its keep when the drive doesn't make sense or the pieces are small enough for cheap parcel rates.
The parcel math is simple. Pieces under 48″ travel at the best courier rates. A bundle of bracket blanks or a railing kit often ships for less than the round trip to Burnside costs you in gas and an hour. Order by 1pm Atlantic on a business day and it usually ships the next business day. Local courier rates show at checkout like any other order, and pickup stays free either way.
What do Halifax projects actually buy?
Repairs and salt work, mostly. The counter sees 44W flat bar and angle for trailer, gate, and equipment repairs, 6061-T6 aluminum for boat and dock brackets, and 304 and 316 stainless anywhere the harbour can reach. As of June 2026, here's what the local staples run.
| Local staple, 12″ piece | Price (CAD, June 2026) |
|---|---|
| 44W flat bar, 1/8″ x 1/2″ | $5.30 |
| 6061-T6 round bar, 1/2″ | $5.96 |
| 304 stainless flat bar, 1/4″ x 2″ | $26.11 |
| 316 stainless flat bar, 1/4″ x 2″ | $29.30 |
The pattern in that table is the harbour. If your part lives within reach of salt spray, the 316 upcharge is cheaper than doing the job twice; inland, 304 holds fine. And for plain repair steel, the 44W on the carbon rack is the workhorse. Prices update daily, so the live page has today's number.
What if you're outside the city?
The whole province orders online, no drive required. We ship pieces up to 96″ anywhere in Canada from the Dartmouth shop, and pieces under 48″ go at the best parcel rates, so a Yarmouth or Sydney order lands without anyone burning a Saturday. Full sticks up to 21 ft move by quote request.
The same 1pm Atlantic cutoff applies: order by then on a business day and it usually ships the next business day. If the whole order is a piece or two, here's how small orders work, including the $40 minimum and how to clear it.
Not sure which counter your job actually needs? Call or write the shop and we'll point you straight, even if the answer is another yard.
