Their only Nova Scotia store is about a 10-minute drive from our shop, where pickup is free. Buying to a spec and a budget? Order from us. In June 2026 the same 1″ 6061 bar cut to 36″ listed at $59.68 in their Halifax store and $32.69 here. Every cut is free at the exact inch, and shipping shows in the cart before you pay.

Credit where it's due first. Metal Supermarkets is the most successful metal retail chain in North America, and the only national walk-in metal chain in Canada, with 25 stores here as of June 2026. We'll name every dimension they win below, plainly, because they've earned several. The honest conclusion stays narrow anyway: they're the right call when today is the deadline and you're outside Nova Scotia, and that's about it.

Where does Metal Supermarkets beat Metals 'R' Us?

Same-day metal, in the cities where they have a store and we don't. You drive over, point at the rack, they cut it, and you carry it out the same afternoon. There's no courier window, and no shipping charge if you pick it up yourself. When a broken gate hinge is holding your whole Saturday hostage in Calgary or Mississauga, that trip wins, and no shipped order competes with it.

You also see the metal before you buy it: straightness, finish, mill scale, your eyes, your call. Their counters are staffed with people who handle metal all day and will talk through the job, and 25 stores across Canada means most major cities have one. They can even win the odd price: in our June 2026 basket test, their Halifax store listed 1/8″ × 1″ mild steel flat bar at $9.08 against our $10.34. That was one line out of six, and the other five are the next section.

Where does Metals 'R' Us beat Metal Supermarkets?

Knowing your full cost before you commit, and paying less on most like items. Five of the six pieces in our June 2026 test basket listed lower with us, most by a wide margin. A 24″ piece of 1/2″ 304 stainless round was $13.51 here against $31.05 at their Halifax store. Every price is national: a buyer in Corner Brook pays what a buyer in Calgary pays. And the cart shows live courier rates before checkout, not after.

Cuts work differently too. You type the exact length in inches, the price shows up, and every cut is free to ±1/8″, whether the piece is 7″ or 96″. Need traceable paper for an inspection? We'll pull a mill test report (an MTR) on request.

Why does the same bar cost a different amount at each Metal Supermarkets store?

Because you shop a store, not a chain. Their site asks you to pick a location before it prices anything, and the number that comes back is that store's price for that store's stock. The spread is real, about 20% on the bar below in June 2026, with cutting baked into the figure. On the cut items we checked, the online price ran roughly $9 over the raw piece price.

Store routing shapes what you can buy, too. In our June 2026 test, their Halifax store couldn't sell us brass hex, 1045 round, or 4140 round online; the system quietly priced those from Ottawa stock instead. The gap held on sheet as well: their 1/8″ 6061 panel at 12″ × 24″ listed at $82.66 in Halifax, while our nearest preset (25″ × 12″, a slightly bigger piece) runs $40.46.

Metal Supermarkets ships UPS Ground almost exclusively, live-rated at checkout, and in June 2026 they were running 30% off online shipping. There's no published rate table, and we couldn't price their exact charge without creating an account, so we're comparing what's public. Their caps: 150 lb a package, 107″ on long pieces, 36″ × 48″ on flat stock, and orders may split into separate boxes. One wrinkle worth knowing: they note extra cuts aren't available once an online order is placed.

Their structural edge is that shipping can be zero if you drive. Ours is that the shipped number is visible early and attached to a lower subtotal on most items.
