Should you walk into Metal Supermarkets or order from Metals 'R' Us?

Metal Supermarkets is the better choice in one situation: you need the metal in your hands today, and you're not in Nova Scotia. Their only Nova Scotia store is about a 10-minute drive from our shop, where pickup is free. Buying to a spec and a budget? Order from us. The same 1″ 6061 round cut to 36″ listed at $59.68 in their Halifax store in June 2026 and runs $27.63 here as of September 2026. Every cut is free at the exact inch, and shipping shows in the cart before you pay.

Credit where it's due first. Metal Supermarkets is the most successful metal retail chain in North America, and the only national walk-in metal chain in Canada, with 25 stores here as of June 2026. We'll name every dimension they win below, plainly, because they've earned several. The honest conclusion stays narrow anyway: they're the right call when today is the deadline and you're outside Nova Scotia, and that's about it.

Where does Metal Supermarkets beat Metals 'R' Us?

Same-day metal, in the cities where they have a store and we don't. You drive over, point at the rack, they cut it, and you carry it out the same afternoon. There's no courier window, and no shipping charge if you pick it up yourself. When a broken gate hinge is holding your whole Saturday hostage in Calgary or Mississauga, that trip wins, and no shipped order competes with it.

You also see the metal before you buy it: straightness, finish, mill scale, your eyes, your call. Their counters are staffed with people who handle metal all day and will talk through the job, and 25 stores across Canada means most major cities have one. They can even win the odd price: in our June 2026 basket test, their Halifax store listed 1/8″ × 1″ mild steel flat at $9.08, and our September 2026 price on that piece is $10.34. That's one line out of six, and the other five are the next section.

Where does Metals 'R' Us beat Metal Supermarkets?

Knowing your full cost before you commit, and paying less on most like items. Five of the six pieces in our test basket list lower with us, their June 2026 store prices against our September 2026 ones, most by a wide margin. A 24″ piece of 1/2″ 304 stainless round is $16.88 here against $31.05 at their Halifax store. Every price is national: a buyer in Corner Brook pays what a buyer in Calgary pays. And the cart shows live courier rates before checkout, not after.

Cuts work differently too. You type the exact length in inches, the price shows up, and every cut is free to ±1/8″, whether the piece is 7″ or 96″. Need traceable paper for an inspection? We'll pull a mill test report (an MTR) on request.

And in Nova Scotia, the walk-in case is ours too. Their only store in the province sits about a 10-minute drive from our shop in Burnside, so the trip is the same trip. Ours ends at a counter with free Dartmouth pickup and the lower listed price on the same piece.

Why does the same piece cost a different amount at each Metal Supermarkets store?

Because you shop a store, not a chain. Their site asks you to pick a location before it prices anything, and the number that comes back is that store's price for that store's stock. The spread is real, about 20% on the piece below in June 2026, with cutting baked into the figure. On the cut items we checked, the online price ran roughly $9 over the raw piece price.

1″ 6061-T6 round, cut to 36″ (their June 2026 list, our September 2026 price) Listed price (CAD)
Metal Supermarkets Halifax/Dartmouth $59.68
Metal Supermarkets Mississauga $67.78
Metal Supermarkets Calgary $71.38
Metals 'R' Us, one price across Canada $27.63

Store routing shapes what you can buy, too. In our June 2026 test, their Halifax store couldn't sell us brass hex, 1045 round, or 4140 round online; the system quietly priced those from Ottawa stock instead. The gap held on sheet as well. Their 1/8″ 6061 panel at 12″ × 24″ listed at $82.66 in Halifax; the panel that covers the same 12″ × 24″ piece runs $42.05 here as of September 2026.

Our model is one price for the whole country. Every length on the aluminum rack, and everything else online, carries a national listed price that updates daily. Volume discounts of 5-15% apply automatically, and the order minimum is $40. The method: on June 11, 2026 we priced the same six-piece basket on their public store configurator, no accounts, no discount codes. Our side is the same basket on our live product pages as of September 13, 2026. The basket: aluminum round and sheet, mild steel flat, stainless round, brass hex, and 1045 round.

What does shipping cost from Metal Supermarkets and Metals 'R' Us?

From us, you'll know before you pay. The cart prices your exact order against live courier rates: our measured six-piece basket ($133.38 of mixed metal) shipped for $30.15 to Halifax, $39.23 to Toronto, and $58.14 to Calgary in September 2026. Landed, that's $163.53, $172.61, and $191.52 pre-tax, and you see the figure before entering a card number.

Metal Supermarkets ships UPS Ground almost exclusively, live-rated at checkout, and in June 2026 they were running 30% off online shipping. There's no published rate table, and we couldn't price their exact charge without creating an account, so we're comparing what's public. Their caps: 150 lb a package, 107″ on long pieces, 36″ × 48″ on flat stock, and orders may split into separate boxes. One wrinkle worth knowing: they note extra cuts aren't available once an online order is placed.

Their structural edge is that shipping can be zero if you drive. Ours is that the shipped number is visible early and attached to a lower subtotal on most items. Pieces up to 96″ ship to any Canadian address, and under 48″ travels at the best parcel rates. Stock up to 21 ft moves by special request through a quote.

Metal Supermarkets or Metals 'R' Us: which fits your project?

Pick Metal Supermarkets when both halves are true: the job needs metal in hand today, and you're outside Nova Scotia. The machine is down, the inspector is coming, and a counter a short drive away beats any courier, ours included. An order under our $40 minimum is their order too.

Everything else, order from us: exact lengths cut free, one national price, measured shipping in the cart, and MTRs when the job needs them. In Nova Scotia the choice barely exists, because the drive is the same ten minutes and the lower price is here. If you're weighing more suppliers than these two, our guide to buying metal online in Canada maps the whole field, from walk-in chains to the US sites that ship north. Have the cut list ready? Build it on the site and the cart will price shipping before checkout, or send a quote request and we'll price the whole list, sourcing included (2-21 days for anything we don't rack).

The verdict
Metal Supermarkets is the better buy in one situation: you need the metal in your hands today, and you're not in Nova Scotia. Their 25 stores earn that case, and same-day walk-out beats any courier, ours included.

Every other order does better here, their June 2026 store prices against our September 2026 ones: five of six basket items cheaper, the 36″ 6061 round at $27.63 against their $59.68. Cuts are free to ±1/8″ at the exact inch, and live shipping shows in the cart before you pay. In Nova Scotia there's no contest to run: their only store is ten minutes from our shop, where pickup is free and the prices are the lower ones.

Common questions

Can you order online from Metal Supermarkets?
Yes. You pick a store, configure the piece, and they ship UPS Ground or hold it for pickup, with cutting included in the price. Your order routes through that one store's stock, though: in our June 2026 test, their Halifax store couldn't sell brass hex, 1045, or 4140 online, and the system priced those pieces from Ottawa instead.
Is Metal Supermarkets cheaper than Metals 'R' Us?
Usually not on like items. Five of the six pieces in our test basket list lower with us, their June 2026 store prices against our September 2026 ones, including a 36″ piece of 1″ 6061 round at $27.63 against $59.68 at their Halifax store. They won one line, the 1/8″ × 1″ mild steel flat at $9.08 to our $10.34, and if you drive to a store and skip shipping entirely, their total can win on a single heavy piece.
Does Metal Supermarkets charge for cutting?
Cutting is included in their online item price. On the cut pieces we checked in June 2026, that price ran about $9 over the raw piece price, and they note extra cuts aren't available once an online order is placed. We handle it differently: every cut is free, to ±1/8″, at any inch from 1″ to 96″, priced live on the product page.
Does Metal Supermarkets show shipping costs before checkout?
No. They live-rate UPS Ground at checkout, with 30% off online shipping as of June 2026, and there's no published rate table, so we couldn't capture their exact charge without an account. We show live courier rates in the cart before checkout: our measured six-piece basket cost $30.15 to ship to Halifax, $39.23 to Toronto, and $58.14 to Calgary in September 2026.
Is there a Metal Supermarkets near Metals 'R' Us?
Yes, and it's their only Nova Scotia store: the Halifax/Dartmouth location is about a 10 minute drive from our shop at 85 Gloria McCluskey Ave in Burnside. That geography is why their walk-in edge mostly disappears in this province. The same trip reaches both counters, and ours ends with the lower listed price, free exact-length cuts, and free pickup.
What's the longest piece each will ship?
Metal Supermarkets caps UPS shipments at 107″ on long pieces, 36″ × 48″ on flat stock, and 150 lb a package, as of June 2026. We ship pieces up to 96″ online anywhere in Canada, lengths under 48″ travel at the best parcel rates, and stock up to 21 ft moves by special request through a quote.
